Democracy in China

This is the first in an occasional series of short and inadequate essays. As far as I know China has been analysed by academics and travel writers, but has not yet found its Boswell. So, until he comes along, here are some half-truths and jokes about sociologists. The point of the title should be obvious, and even if it is not, democracy, as Cleisthenes used to say, is what you make of it. Innit?
